Judo is a system of physical education that is based on the study of techniques from the Japanese martial arts. The techniques of judo were selected and adapted so that they could be safely used in both cooperative training and competitive sporting events such as the Olympic judo competitions.
The student of judo learns to combine his or her strength with the partner’s strength to throw the partner to the mat in a safe and controlled manner, in order to ensure the partner’s safety. The student also learns to use his or her strength efficiently to control the partner on the mat using grappling techniques. Children can safely use all their strength in practicing judo.
Training is always done in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. As a consequence, students develop mental as well as physical strength and flexibility. The cooperative practice of the techniques and etiquette of judo also cultivates confidence and a sense of community.
